2) PURITY (98.5% Minimum):
Definition:
Purity refers to the wholesomeness of the seeds. The specification is that the seeds should be as clean as possible, i.e. at least 98.5% pure.
Manual Assessment | Importance |
a) Whole seeds | Whole seeds prevent them from turning rancid during storage/ shipment as well as preserve the quality of oil. Damaged seeds turn them rancid quickly and erode quality of the oil. |
b) Free of insects | Absence of insects prevents damage done to seed appearance, smell and taste by insects. Damage to the seeds caused by insects, which aggravates during storage/shipment, erodes the quality (cleanness and oil content) of seeds. |
c) Clean seeds | To ensure absence of dirt, stones and other particles which reduce useful seeds in any given quantity purchased and cause processing complications. |
